Dudley is One Now

Dudley turned one year old on April 3. He’s a devious dude. His latest obsession is the laser printer. (to the left in the picture below). If he hears it turn on, he runs to see what comes out. He’ll sit next to it, even if it’s off, and hope something appears. Here he is …

Twenty Years in the Northwest

On January 7, 2003, Julian, our two cats, and I caught a flight from Greensboro to Seattle so Julian could start his job at the University of Washington. I don’t remember much about the flight, but I sure remember going through security with Jasper glommed onto me. I still have the divots from his claws …

Kitten-Proofing a Home

Acclimating Dudley to our home has been challenging. We haven’t had a kitten in over 11 years, so we’re a bit rusty in kitten-proofing. In addition, our previous two homes were ranches. We didn’t have to worry about what might be going on upstairs or downstairs. Each feline has its own personality quirks to consider …

Blue-ish Christmas

If anything, my mood this year about the holiday was even worse than it was last year. The continued claustrophobia of working from home and the pandemic wore on my psyche big time. Add to that the losses of my mom in January and Luka earlier in the week and you have a recipe for …

Elegy for Luka

Luka, our elder states cat, died today at the age of 14 1/2. He probably had cancer. The vet who euthanized him also euthanized his predecessor, Jasper, years ago. Julian and I were able to be with him when he died. Luka came to us from a breeder in Ohio in August 2007. I picked …

The Right-Sided Mouse

I’m a proud southpaw. Julian looked over at my work computer setup the other day and asked, “How come your mouse is on the right side?” I replied, “So I can write while I’m manipulating the mouse.” Actually, the real reason is so I can pet whoever is on my lap with my left hand.

Cat Quilts

One of my friends was curious about the quilts that my mother made for the cats. Ask and ye shall see…

Social Distancing Demonstration

I was on virtual happy hour with my Cornell classmates yesterday when Julian took this picture of Luka practicing social distancing: In contrast, here’s a photo I took last week of Neli doing quite the opposite:

In Search of Pastrami

David Sax, in his 2009 book Save the Deli, bemoaned the loss of traditional Jewish delis. Here is a list of delis that are of blessed memory : Ithaca, NY – Hal’s Dallas – Phil’s Miami – Wolfie’s, Corky’s, The Rascal House Since we’ve lived in the Seattle area, several delis have gone extinct. The …

The PSSST Game

I’ve played a game with my cats over the years that I call The PSSST game. The rules are simple: Hide around a corner from the cat. Peek around and say, “PSSST!” If the cat doesn’t come the first time, repeat. Often if the cat doesn’t come after two or three times, peek around the …
