Spamorama

We had lunch at a Japanese/Vietnamese spot today, Poké Café. Julian had a banh mi, I had a ramen bowl. After he finished the banh mi, he decided that it time to try spam musubi. For those of you in Sheboygan or Syracuse, Spam musubi is a quintessentially Hawaiian food. It consists of rice and Spam …

Christmas Cookbooks

I think Julian wants me to fill up the new bookshelves. In addition to the five we brought home from France last week, I received these: For my part, I got him some implements with which to cook the recipes from these books. A local cookware store is closing because the owner is retiring.

Last Day in Paris

Our last day in Paris was jam-packed. Bruce  attended Mass while Julian and I went to the Grenelle open-air market. We always seem to go to these markets the day before we return to chain-grocery monotony. The displays of fish, meats, cheeses, and other foodstuffs were tempting. Julian bought a vegetable peeler and a tin …

More Vacation Lessons

Nobody needed to visit an emergency room this year. We got to Charles de Gaulle Airport in plenty of time to catch our flight home. We had congenial companionship with our friend Bruce and Julian’s cousin Kitty. With the exception of the train ride back from Chartres, it was a very pleasant vacation. As usual, …

A Train Wreck of a Day

We took the train out of Paris to Chartres on Saturday to visit the cathedral. Getting to Gare Montparnasse was a feat in itself, given the closures of many Metro stations due to the Gilets Jaunes (yellow vest) protests. However, we got to the station and reached the town around noon. Lunch was at Tomate …

Montmartre Revisited

In a post three years ago, I registered my reservations about the Montmartre neighborhood of Paris and the Basilica of Sacré-Coeur. We went there today after our sojourn to the Eiffel Tower. It could be that the neighborhood is growing on me, or at least the basilica is. It was much less crowded than in …

Breakfast in Paris

We do breakfast comme des Parisiens on this side of the Atlantic. Every morning we go to a bakery and get a fresh baguette pas trop cuit (not too hard) and a couple of croissants. We have juice and assorted cheeses on hand in the refrigerator. We’ll also pick up some fruit. Then we feast. …

Basque-ing in Goodness

Tonight’s dinner was at a Basque restaurant near our apartment called Pottoka. Le Pays Basque straddles the border between France and Spain. The Basques are independent sorts who have their own language, which bears no resemblance to any other Indo-European tongue. They were horribly suppressed by the Franco regime in Spain; as a partial result, …

Seen in a Marks & Spencer

Marks & Spencer is an upscale British grocery chain that’s established a beach-head in France. Today we dove into one to warm up on our travels near La Place Bastille. This is one of the first items I ran across: I saw several more shelves of gluten-free goodies.

Paris Promenades

We’ve had some scheduled items on this year’s trip. However, we’ve had plenty of chance encounters. On our first full day we went to the Church of St. Denis. This is a very old church that’s the burial place of much of French royalty, from Dagobert and Charlemagne to Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI. St. …
