Misery in Misurina

We left Santa Cristina on Saturday and negotiated more hairpin turns in Guido Carducci. I wasn’t feeling well. We stopped in Cortina, a relatively large town in the Dolomites favored by the moneyed gentry. Cortina hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics and will do so in 2026 with Milan. The downtown area is full of designer …

Ciao d’Italia

Our next stop on the Canals and Cannolis Tour is Italy. We caught an early flight from Amsterdam to Venice on Tuesday. We rented a car so we could get to the Dolomite Mountains. Here’s this year’s model, an Abarth 595 (souped-up Fiat 500). Miraculously, we fit in all of our luggage with the back …

More Cute Shoes

My friends in the Cult of Cute Shoes anxiously await this post every time I travel. Today’s entries are from the Wooden Shoe Museum and factory at the Zaansche Schans park in the Netherlands. I’m sure we’ll find more beauties in Venice. Hiking boots are considered cute in the Dolomites.

Dudley is One Now

Dudley turned one year old on April 3. He’s a devious dude. His latest obsession is the laser printer. (to the left in the picture below). If he hears it turn on, he runs to see what comes out. He’ll sit next to it, even if it’s off, and hope something appears. Here he is …

Snow Dazed

Snow days aren’t what they used to be. The three of us would wait breathlessly to hear, “Hannibal Central School is closed”, from the TV or radio. It always seemed as if Hannibal was the last school in the county to close. We believed that if the district superintendent couldn’t see the barn across the …

Seen at O’Hare Airport

O’Hare Airport in Chicago has Cannabis Amnesty Boxes. This allows people to ditch their weed before going through airport security, although we saw them in the concourses after security. The boxes look like a ballot or mail drop box, with slots that don’t allow you to stick your arm in to retrieve any goodies. (I’m …

Love Finds a Way

You may recall the story of the Pont des Arts in Paris. Couples would attach padlocks to the wire grates on the bridge to signify their love. Unfortunately, the weight of the padlocks caused several of the bridge railings to crash into the Seine. I wrote about it in this post. This is what the …

Evolution of a Haircut

Some people have bad hair days. I have a bad hair life. My mother thought my straight hair needed to be permed, so I had several perms before she gave up and made sure I got pixie cuts for years. When I chose to get a permanent as an adult, Mom said, “You know, I …

Brownies 1, Ego 0

Julian made some brownies the other night. He took some to his homeowners’ association board meeting. He came home crestfallen. One of the other board members told him to thank ME for making them.

Menu, Schmenu!

We do our weekly menu planning on Fridays. This menu greeted me on the refrigerator when I came down to breakfast Friday morning. Here’s my reply: Needless to say, we hammered out a more feasible and equitable menu plan at lunch.
